Am I a freak for being OBSESSED with this book? probably. Does this dark romance completely blow me away? YES. Before this book, I had little to no idea what morally gray characters meant, and this novel was quite the lesson. To enjoy this book, you have to get on board with the idea that while they do illegal things, they are both redeemable. Rowan Kane literally follows the “touch her and die” mentality and is a romantic at his core. Sloane Sutherland is a bit broken, possesses a funny inner monologue, and constantly fights her desire to remain independent and her growing feelings for Rowan. Of the two, I felt Sloane had the stronger character arc and growth; however, I felt Weaver held back on both their backstories. I was hoping to dive into more about how each character came into their profession and it was hinted at rather fully explained.

As an introduction to a series, this was excellent. This book is rivals to partners to lovers and the growth is so fun to follow. You meet the leads for the next books seamlessly without seeming like the storyline is forced. I look forward to exploring the storyline for both Fionn and Lachlan and hope to explore the full history of the Kane brothers.

The audio, dual point of view, is executed perfectly. The Irish accent of Rowan, performed by Joe Arden, is perfect and incredibly attractive. Both Arden and Lucy Rivers, who voices Sloane, read the entirety of their dialogue through both POVs. The slow build and sexual tension are delightful, and once things begin, they are spicy. The story is complex for a romance but easy to follow and even has some unexpected twists, which keep this novel fast-paced despite its length. This was dark, this was gory, this was sexy, and it was utterly wonderful to read. I loved the audio and have my eye on a special edition hardcover to add to my library

ps. This book is very graphic of the specific quirks of serial killers. If you are squeamish, avoid at all costs.

Ps. Read the trigger warnings; don’t say I didn’t warn ya. 🩸🔪
